Physinews Reports: A boat carrying around 600 migrants has
capsized off the coast of Egypt with the loss
of at least 29 lives.
Some 150 people are thought to have been
rescued after the vessel turned over shortly
after leaving the port of Rosetta, near
Alexandria.
"Twenty-nine people have died and five were
injured when a boat carrying illegal migrants
capsized off the coast of Rosetta," Egypt's
health ministry said in a statement.
Health ministry official Alaa Osman said the
migrants were from several African countries
and hospitals are being prepared to receive
casualties.
Separately, Save the Children carried out two
migrant rescue missions in the Mediterranean
off the Libyan coast.
It comes months after the head of the EU's
border agency warned that growing numbers
of Europe-bound migrants were turning to
Egypt as a departure point for the perilous
journey.
With the closure of the Balkans route popular
with migrants seeking to reach northern
European countries, as well as an EU deal
with Turkey to halt departures, asylum
seekers are seeking other routes.
Smugglers often overload unseaworthy boats
with passengers who have paid for the
journey.
More than 300,000 migrants have crossed
the Mediterranean to Europe so far this year
from various departure points but particularly
from Libya and Egypt.
However this figure is down from the 520,000
that made the journey in the first nine
months last year.
According to the UN more than 10,000
people have died crossing the Mediterranean
to Europe since 2014.
